Bloomfield gets educated on tools to ensure affordable housing

Bloomfielders have watched as neighborhood housing prices have risen steadily in recent years. These increases have pushed out many longtime renters, and closed the door for first-time and low to moderate-income homebuyers. Recently, this issues was thrust into the spotlight when Milhaus Development proposal to demolish ShurSave to build 237 luxury units. We’re now trying to answer the question: how do we keep Bloomfield, Bloomfield? How do we make sure that Bloomfield has a place for everyone?

Bloomfield Housing Affordability Toolkit

The Milhaus proposal for a large, market-rate apartment complex where ShurSave stands has prompted community members to speak out about their need for affordable housing.

Join us at the West Penn School of Nursing auditorium on Thursday, May 24th from 6:00PM-8:30PM for an interactive workshop to follow up on our February housing affordability forum. Guest speakers from local organizations fighting for affordable housing will give short presentations about five of the most effective tools we can use to ensure housing in Bloomfield remains affordable for all.

Statement on ShurSave Redevelopment

On January 29, 2018, more than 398 people attended a community meeting to learn more about proposed redevelopment at the ShurSave IGA site, mediated by Bloomfield Development Corporation as part of our Community Process for New Development. The numbers make it clear that this site is central to the identity of Bloomfield; attending the meeting were 286 Bloomfield residents, 13 business owners, 33 residents of other neighborhoods, 50 people from unknown neighborhoods, and 6 elected officials or representatives.
